Colorado State Flag

Colorado State Flag

History of the Colorado State Flag:

The history of the Colorado state flag dates back to June of 1911 when it was designed by Andrew Carlisle Carson. The Colorado flag is composed of three stripes with the outer two being blue and the inner strip being white. Left-centered on the flag is a large red “C” for Colorado. The center of this “C” is colored to a brilliant gold. The gold in the center of the flag represents the state’s vast amount of sunshine, the blue is for the clear blue skies of Colorado, the white symbolizes the snow capped mountains, and the red is the color of most of the state’s soil. There was also a stipulation in the original design that the flag was always to have a cord of intertwined gold and silver with same colored tassels attached to it. Some controversy over the flag arose in 1929 in regards to the precise shades of red and blue to be used. This issue was solved by the General Assembly by stating that they are to be the same as those used for the American flag. Another controversy arose over the size of the letter “C.” The General Assembly addressed this issue in 1964 to stipulate the specific diameter and distance from the staff that the “C” is to be placed.
