History of the Iowa State Flag:

The history of the Iowa state flag dates back to 1921. This was roughly seventy-five years after Iowa was admitted to the Union. The prompting of the creation of this state flag came from the Iowa National Guardsmen stationed on the Mexican Boarder in World War I. These soldiers saw that units from other states were carrying official banners for their states and Iowa did not have one to display. The Iowa state flag that we know today was designed by Mrs. Dixie Cornell Gebhadt. It offers three vertical stripes of red, white, and blue. The blue references loyalty, justice and truth, the white references purity, the red references courage, and the three colors combined pay homage to the United States of America. The white stripe offers an eagle carrying a white banner. On this banner is blue letters is the state’s motto “Our Liberties we prize, and our Rights we will maintain.” The states name is printed in red directly under the eagle.
