Indiana State Flag

Indiana State Flag

History of the Indiana State Flag:

The history of the Indiana state flag dates back to 1916 with a design contest that was held by the Daughters of the American Revolution. This contest was to celebrate the state’s Centennial celebration. Paul Hadley, an artist from Mooresville Indiana, was the creator of the winning design and the Indiana flag we know today. This flag is on a blue background with a gold flaming torch in the center. The torch is surrounded by an outer circle of 13 stars and an inner circle of 5 and also offers 6 expanding rays. “Liberty and enlightenment” is said to be the meaning behind the torch and its flame and the 6 rays refer to the expansive nature of “liberty and enlightenment.” The 13 stars represent the 13 original colonies and the inner 5 refer to the next 5 admitted to the Union. Directly above the torch’s flame is one large star and the states name. The star references Indiana as the 19th state admitted to the Union.
