Kansas State Flag

Kansas State Flag

History of the Kansas State Flag:

The history of the Kansas state flag leads us back to 1927 when the flag was officially recognized by the state. The flag was first seen flying over Fort Riley for the men of the Kansas National Guard and all the troops of Fort Riley. The flag offers a deep blue background with the Kansas state seal centered on the flag. Beneath the seal is “Kansas” in gold lettering. Above the seal is the state’s crest which includes a sunflower upon a gold and blue entangled bar. This crest is used to symbolize the Louisiana Purchase when Kansas was officially created. The sunflower of the crest appears to be torn from its stock which many Kansans feel represents their fearlessness. The seal of Kansas offers thirty-four clustered stares at the top, representing Kansas as the thirty-fourth state in the Union and over these stars is the state’s motto “Ad Astra per Aspera”. This motto is Latin for “To the Stars through Difficulties.” The seal also shows Native Americans hunting bison, a farmer plowing, a steamboat navigating the Kansas river, and the rolling hills of Fort Riley.
