Louisiana State Flag

History of the Louisiana State Flag:

The history of the Louisiana state flag dates back to roughly fifty years after Louisiana joined the Union in 1812. At this time Louisiana seceded from the Union and began to fly one of the two flags of the Confederate Union. The state also flew another flag, one of an independent nation. This flag offered 13 stripes that alternated red, white, and blue and a red square in the upper left corner. In the red square was a gold five-point star. The Louisiana flag that we know today was adopted in 1912. It is unclear if Louisiana had a flag that they claimed in the time in between this flag and the flying of the Confederate colors. This flag offers a liberty blue background with an Eastern Brown Pelican from the state’s seal in the center. This pelican is the state’s bird and also applies to the state’s nickname as “the Pelican State.” The pelican is shown feeding her children in her nest and under the nest is a banner with the state’s motto “Union, Justice, and Confidence” printed in liberty blue.
