Maryland State Flag
History of the Maryland State Flag:
The history of the Maryland state flag dates back to 1904 and is based upon heraldic emblems. The flag’s design came from a shield of coat of arms of the Calvert family. The Calvert family was the colonial proprietors of the state. The shield combines yellow and black of the paternal family and red and white of the maternal side. The colors are combined in this manner and lay in four diagonal rectangles. The use of this flag was discontinued after the revolution and no official flag appears to be flown until the late 1890s. After the election of President Lincoln the red and white colors gained popularity with Massachusetts residents who felt for the southern states. This flag was produced as a sympathy flag and after the Civil War came to an end the flag continued as a symbol of Maryland. It is unknown who designed the Massachusetts flag we know today, but it is a version of the original and still shows the colors of the Calvert family
