Oregon State Flag

Oregon State Flag

History of the Oregon State Flag:

Adopted in 1925, the Oregon State Flag is the only state flag that displays a different design on each side. It is colored navy blue with gold lettering and symbols. On more traditional occasions, the Oregon flag heralds a more formal version bearing a "dress" or "parade" version of the flag fringed in gold. The face of the Oregon State Flag displays the words "STATE OF OREGON" above a gold shield bordered by thirty-three stars. The stars represent Oregon as the thirty-third state to be admitted to the union. Below the shield lies the date "1859" in gold numerals – the year that Oregon was welcomed to the union. Depicted on the shield of the Oregon state flag is a blazing sun setting over the Pacific Ocean with a backdrop of mountains, forests, and a Conestoga wagon to represent the early settlers to the territory, natural resources, and the beauty of Oregon state. A plow, a sheaf of wheat, and a pickax represent the early industry of agriculture and mining in the state. Two ships are shown to illustrate the departing British ship and arriving American ship. The ships are said to represent that the claim to the land was by both Great Britain and The United States at the same time. Another interpretation has the departure and arrival as representative of trade or commerce. In the center of the flag are the crest of the shield containing the American eagle and a banner that reads "The Union." The eagle and the banner express support for "The Union" when Oregon joined in 1859. Known as "The Beaver State", the Oregon State Animal brings a strong emergence as it is depicted on one side of the Oregon state flag.
