History of the District of Columbia State Flag:

Adopted in 1938, the design of the District of Columbia’s flag was based on the shield from George Washington's family coat of arms. The coat of arms depicts George and Martha Washington beneath traditional armorial devices and a cupola representing Mount Vernon, Washington's home. Between them, they support a shield emblazoned with three stars and two stripes, emblems from the armorial ensigns of George Washington's family, which also appear on the District of Columbia's flag. The District of Columbia's flag includes three red stars near the top and two red stripes through the center on a field of white.
