History of the Georgia State Flag:

The history of the Georgia state flag is one of the most complicated and involved of any state in the union. In November of 1860 after the election of President Lincoln a flag a secession flag was raised over Savannah, Georgia. This flag was pure white with a coiled snake centered and the words “our Motto, Southern States, Equality of the States, Don’t Tread on Me.” This was said to be the first of many unofficial secession flags for Georgia that arose throughout this era. These flags were often a single star on a plain background to signify that the state wanted to withdraw from the union. A song entitled “Bonnie Blue Flag” was written about just such flag. Like many of the other Confederate States, Georgia flew one of the two Confederate National Flags from 1861 to 1865. In 1879 Confederate Veteran Colonel Herman H. Perry introduced legislation for Georgia’s first state flag. This flag offered a vertical stripe of liberty blue and then three horizontal stripes with the outer two being crimson red and the inner being white. This flag was officially approved later that year. In 1902 a law was passed that the state’s Coat of Arms was to be added to the plain blue stripe. There is little evidence that this flag was ever made. After many more small changes, and Atlanta attorney proposed a new flag design in 1955. His design incorporated the Confederate Battle flag over a red backdrop with a vertical stripe of blue that included the state’s seal. This flag began to fly over Georgia in 1956. Many Georgians thought this flag was distasteful and portrayed a bad light on Georgia and its history. In January of 2001 a new flag was risen over Georgia. This flag offered a blue background with the Great Seal of Georgia on its center. This seal is bordered by 13 stars that represent Georgia as one of the 13 original colonies. Beneath the seal is a banner that includes all of the flags that have ever flown over the state. Under this banner the motto “In God We Trust” is printed. This flag only flew for two years as many Georgians also apposed this flag due to its “poor design.” In 2003 Governor Sonny Perdue signed a bill that would again recognize a new state flag. This Georgia state flag is the Georgia flag we know today. It offers three stripes with the two outer being red and the inner being white and the upper left corner a blue square. In the square is the Georgia Coat of Arms in gold surrounded by 13 stars in a circular fashion. Under the Coat of Arms is the motto “In God We Trust.”
