History of the Indiana State Flag:
The history of the Indiana state flag dates back to 1916 with a design contest that was held by the Daughters of the American Revolution. This contest was to celebrate the state’s Centennial celebration. Paul Hadley, an artist from Mooresville Indiana, was the creator of the winning design and the Indiana flag we know today. This flag is on a blue background with a gold flaming torch in the center. The torch is surrounded by an outer circle of 13 stars and an inner circle of 5 and also offers 6 expanding rays. “Liberty and enlightenment” is said to be the meaning behind the torch and its flame and the 6 rays refer to the expansive nature of “liberty and enlightenment.” The 13 stars represent the 13 original colonies and the inner 5 refer to the next 5 admitted to the Union. Directly above the torch’s flame is one large star and the states name. The star references Indiana as the 19th state admitted to the Union. Designed by Paul Hadley of Mooresville - adopted by 1917 Indiana General Assembly
Official description of the Indiana State flag Code 1-2-2-1: The Indiana (IN) state flag dimensions shall be three (3) feet fly by two (2) feet hoist; or five (5) feet fly by three (3) feet hoist; or any size proportionate to either of those dimensions. The field of the Indiana(IN) state flag shall be blue with nineteen (19) stars and a flaming torch in gold or buff. Thirteen (13) stars on the state flag of Indiana(IN) shall be arranged in an outer circle, representing the original thirteen (13) states; five (5) stars shall be arranged in a half circle below the torch and inside the outer circle of stars, representing the states admitted prior to the state of Indiana; and the nineteenth star, appreciably larger than the others and representing the state of Indiana shall be placed above the flame of the torch. The outer circle of stars shall be so arranged that one (1) star shall appear directly in the middle at the top of the circle, and the word "Indiana" shall be placed in a half circle over and above the star representing the state of Indiana and midway between it and the star in the center above it. Rays shall be shown radiating from the torch to the three (3) stars on each side of the star in the upper center of the circle.
The Indiana State Flag is always carried or displayed on the observer's right of the American Flag.
