The history of the Missouri state flag can be traced back to March of 1913 when the official state flag was adopted. This was roughly ninety-two years after Missouri was admitted to the United States of America. The flag’s design was created by Marie Elizabeth Watkins Oliver. It offers three horizontal stripes that are equal in size and the colors of red, white, and blue. Centered on the flag is the Missouri Coat of Arms with a border in blue that contains twenty-four stars to represent Missouri as the twenty-fourth state admitted to the union. There is one of these stars that is larger than the others to signify Missouri and it is surrounded by clouds to show the struggle the state went through while becoming an official state. The Coat of Arms for Missouri shows a bald eagle with an olive branch and an arrow in its talons, a grizzly bear, and a crescent moon. The eagle is to represent the strength and powers of the federal government, the grizzly bear is for the same reasons as the eagle but in reference to the citizens of Missouri, and the crescent moon offers two references: the small population with little wealth and large potential that were in the state at its time of induction and being the second state from the Louisiana Purchase. There is another grizzly bear on each side which again refers to the strength of the Missouri citizens. These grizzly bears are standing on a banner that shows the state’s motto “Salus Populi Suprema Lex Esto” of “Let the welfare of the people by the supreme law.” Under this banner, in Roman Numerals, is the state’s year of admission to the Union 1820.
