The New Hampshire State Legislature adopted the New Hampshire state flag in 1909, but the flags design has been in use since 1784. The flag heralds the State Seal of New Hampshire on a blue backdrop surrounded by laurel leaves and nine stars representing New Hampshire as the ninth state to join the Union. The New Hampshire state flag has been altered once since its adoption in 1909. This change was not to the design of the state flag itself, but to the State Seal centered on the flag. The New Hampshire State Legislature passed recommendations to more precisely describe the State Seal at the prompting of the New Hampshire Historical Society in 1931. The state seal contains the ship "Raleigh" sailing near a large gray granite rock, in front of a yellow sun rising. The Raleigh was built to fight the British during the Revolutionary War. This scene is surrounded by the words, "Seal of the State of New Hampshire 1776."
