Vermont State Flag History:

The Vermont state flag history can date back to its admission into the Union. Vermont was the fourteenth state admitted to the Union in 1791 and Kentucky was the fifteenth in 1972. Congress changed the official design of the United States Flag to have fifteen stripes and stars. This obviously was never fully adopted and in 1817 Congress approved the thirteen stripes and a star for each state. The Vermont state flag however was attempted many times around this period and the first was a state militia flag from 1803. This flag offered seventeen stripes and stars, as two more states had been adopted in this time period, and the word “Vermont” was above the stars and stripes. In 1838, after many more states had been adopted, Vermont decided to try and create a design that was more their own, This flag offered thirteen red and white stripes and one large centered white star on a blue background with the Vermont Coat of Arms printed on it. This flag flew over the state until 1919. In 1919, again wanting a flag that was even more state specific, Vermont changed the flag again to the Vermont flag we know today. This flag offers a blue background with the Vermont State Seal in its center.
