The history of the Wisconsin state flag can be traced back to the days of the Civil War. In 1863, the Wisconsin soldiers requested that they had an official banner to fly while in battle. The legislature created a selection committee to adopt a design that was already in use by some of the Wisconsin troops. The Wisconsin flag is dark blue in color and offers the state’s coat of arms in its center. The flag has only been changed once in 1979 and this was to make the addition of "Wisconsin" in white block letters above the seal and "1848" the state’s admission year into the Union below the seal.
