History:

The history of the Zion (Israel) flag takes us to a small shop in New York City. The shop was called "Harlem Upholsterer" and was owned and run by the Harris (officially Arriz, but was mistranslated in their coming to America) family. This Jewish family specialized in canvas products such as awnings, but also made flags and banners. Their son, Morris, was the designer of such flags. As Morris grew, he married and he and his wife became members of a group called "Havevy Zion." The purpose of this group was to save and raise money to purchase a portion of Palestine for Jewish people (the money was returned later by the Ottoman Empire in protest). At the first international meeting of this group in 1987, Morris was sent as the New York representative. All of the representatives were using there special talents to add to the enjoyment of the meeting, Morris brought his talent of flag design. Morris created what we know as the flag of Zion (Israel) today. He constructed the flag to be the same size as a traditional American flag and chose the traditional Jewish colors of sky blue and white (symbolizing heaven and earth) as its focus. The flag offered two horizontal sky blue stripes which encased a centered blue Star of David. The "Havevy Zion" group thought the flag was amazing an in 1898 the flag was officially adopted as the flag of Zion. Until 1948, the flag was also seen as the Jewish flag, but at this time the state of Israel was born and it adopted it as its official flag. The flag is still widely used today as the Jewish flag or the flag of Zion.
